SELF CARE FOR ALL
BIND London hugely advocates wellbeing as a priority for all, with fitness being part of the wellbeing ‘toolkit’. We promote a positive message that doesn’t require us to compromise our hair and fitness, with our ORIGINS MMXX debut collection of award winning sweat wicking hair protection for all hair types and textures when training. We also look at how this plays a role in our overall wellbeing.
WHAT IS SELF CARE?
The definition of wellbeing is, ‘the state of being comfortable, healthy and happy’. Social media plays a role in the aesthetically pleasing content that visualises what ‘self care’ looks like – spa retreats, vacays, therapy, wellness/beauty treatments … to name a few. Many of these come with a price tag, and can give the illusion that self care is reserved only for those with the financial means to do so.
We want to share five suggestions on how to achieve self care on a budget, that can be embedded into your regular wellbeing practice. Particularly in black and brown communities, systemic stresses require that taking time for self care needs to be a ‘non negotiable’ as opposed to a ‘when I have the time’ practice.
Instead of,
Luxury gyms – go for walks
Many luxury gyms that come with steam room, sauna, ice bath etc, are accompanied with a larger monthly commitment. Getting outside for a walk is not only free, but you get to experience fresh air and nature. There are also community walks where you can also meet like minded people, for example Black Girls Hike
Massages – have a long relaxing bath
Add sea salts to ease muscle soreness, stimulate circulation, and also detoxify your skin
Spa weekend – schedule in time for solitude
Heavy on the word ‘schedule’ here, as circumstances such as children/family/long days/busy routines, may make this challenging. However, scheduling time in solitude can be time for reflection, journaling … time to mentally unplug from the fast paced digital world
Retreats – schedule time for mindfulness and breathwork
Mindfulness is a form of meditation that requires being present in the moment. There are also many apps that can assist with this. Calm app is a personal favourite of ours. Schedule a consistent time of the day in order to form a healthy habit
Holiday – UK breaks/budgeting
In the cost of living crisis, for some, a holiday may not be possible, and seeing other people enjoying sunshine and heart shaped breakfast trays in pools may create FOMO, especially in this season of dark, wet and windy wintery weather. You can opt for a UK holiday destination. Alternatively, you can budget a set amount each month until financially equipped to enjoy a much needed break overseas
